1. Instructions

1.1 Supported Operating Systems

    - English Windows XP with SP2
    - English Windows 2000 with SP4

1.2 Standard Installation

To install the web release of DPFU 4.2,
     1. Run Dfu.exe to extract the setup files to the default folder
        "C:\Program Files\DFU 4.2 setup" or to a user-defined folder if desired
     2. Open the above folder, and run setup.exe
     3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DPFU on your PC

1.3 Uninstallation

Users should remove DPFU through the `Add/Remove Programs' tool in the Windows
Control Panel. To open this control panel, choose Settings->Control Panel from
the Start Menu, then double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

If the io2 software is installed on the PC, uninstalling Digital Pen 2
Firmware Updater (DPFU) will not uninstall the io2 pen driver, and users can
continue to use their io2 software after the uninstallation of the DPFU.

If the io2 software is uninstalled from the PC after the DPFU is installed,
users will be able to use the DPFU application to update their pen. This is
because the io2 software does not remove the pen driver for the DPFU.

1.4 Updating the Firmware stored on the PC when receiving new DPFU versions

The firmware inside the DPFU folder can be updated by installing the new
version of DPFU on top of itself without uninstalling the DPFU and installing
  the new DPFU.

    1. Repeat the installation steps in section 1.2, above
    2. Install the DPFU on top of itself by overwriting the previous firmware
    3. The new version of firmware will be installed on the PC and can be used
       to update the pen

1.5 Software Constraints

    - The Microsoft .NET Framework is not required to run DPFU.
    - All running applications must be exited before starting the update.
    - DPFU can be used on PCs where Digital Pen SW 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.0,
3.1 or higher is installed. DPFU is not compatible with Digital Pen SW 1.0.

1.6 USB Driver Stack Issues under Windows XP

Microsoft has reported issues with early versions of the USB
drivers included up to Windows XP Service Pack 1. This could prevent proper
usage of your Digital Pen device. To learn how to correct this issue,
  please visit Logitech website:

  http://www.logitech.com/iosupport/822603

1.7 Using DPFU to Update the Firmware inside the Pen

After installing DPFU (see section 1.2, above), follow these steps to update
  the pen's firmware:
    1. Place your pen in the cradle
    2. Open DPFU from the Start Menu item, found under Start Menu-> Programs->
Digital Pen 2 Firmware Updater-> Firmware Updater
    4. Click Next at the Welcome Screen and follow the instructions
    5. The Firmware inside the pen will be updated to the new version

1.8 Performing a master reset

  1. Take off the digital pen's cap and then press the pen tip on a surface
while you press the reset button with a paper clip or pencil tip.
  2. Keep the pen's tip pressed on the surface while you remove the paper
clip or pencil tip from the reset button. Continue to hold the pen to the
surface until the Battery and Memory Status LEDs stop blinking red, then
lift the pen. The digital pen restarts and vibrates to indicate that
it is ready to be used again.

1.9 USB Connection

The pen must be directly connected to the PC on which the update is taking place.
The update cannot be performed if the pen is connected to a USB hub or to
  a laptop's docking station.

2. Troubleshooting

2.1 The pen does not reset by itself at the end of an update

If, at the end of an update, the update appears to be complete and the screen
displays congratulations but the light of the pen is still off, the user
should reset the pen by pressing its reset button.

2.2 The update is interrupted before completion

If an update is interrupted before completion, the pen will blink red and not
work properly with the digital pen software. The user must re-update his pen in order
  for it to work correctly.
  1. Replug the pen in the cradle
  2. Restart the update

2.3 Insufficient Privileges to run this application

Under Windows XP and Windows 2000, if io2 software is installed on the PC,
restricted users can not run the DPFU to update pens.

2.4 DPFU prevents the system from going into suspend mode or shutdown while
     updating

During an update, the utility prevents the system from going into standby,
hibernation and from shutting down. This behavior is normal, it prevents an
interruption of the update which could potentially damage the pen.

3. Major Known Issues

3.1 The tray icon can not be restarted after finishing a firmware update

Sometimes after finishing the firmware update and closing the "Update
Complete" window, the io2 software tray icon is still red. If unplugging and
replugging the pen into the cradle does not fix this, the user should reboot
  the PC.

3.2 The tray icon is red but some processes are still running before
     beginning a firmware update.

Sometimes, when the firmware update has begun, some digital pen software processes
are not correctly stopped, so the user cannot continue with the update. In this
case the user needs to try again by clicking on Next in the Firmware Updater.
If it still does not work, the user should restart the PC.

3.3 Error Message: "Update failed! DFU is not supported with this device"

This message may appear in the following situations :

    - if a pen was connected to the PC while the Firmware Updater utility was being installed
    - if a pen was plugged in its cradle while the PC was restarting
    - if some pen-related or any other Logitech software software was installed, uninstalled or
updated, such as io2 software, Mouse and Keyboard software, etc.

To solve the above issues, undock and redock the pen from its cradle and restart the Firmware
Updater. If the problem can not be solved, you may need to re-install the Firmware Updater.
